Behond The Bone 2005
Naga Gallery, Boston, MA
Using so much salt in her studio, Ms Solondz had trouble with everything rusting. In 2004 she began to realize that rust, and the process of rusting, had transformative properties as well. For this installation, Ms. Solondz painted images of heads onto fabric using iron filings and then immersed them in basins, (made of beeswax,) that were filled with super saturated salt solution. The images in the basins rusted and changed over the course of the exhibition. The installation also included a wall of the rusted fabric heads, (removed from the basins,) and the basins themselves, (where a second image was formed from filings that fell through the weave of the fabric.)
