The River 2004
Bell Gallery, Brown University, Providence, RI
Made for an exhibition at Brown University’s Bell Gallery in 2004, The River was initially meant to be part of a larger installation, (incorporating the soap and vats,) called Until Everything Not Essential was Washed Away.” The piece consisted of a 12 foot x 6 foot box – 20” high – that had 500 rocks, 25 motors, and 20 underwater lights that simulated a river. Draped over the rocks were 7 pieces of tethered colored fabric, that were suggestive of dresses undulating in the current. Over the course of the exhibition, the color in the fabric slowly washed away.
