Bee and Birdseed Palaces

2016-2018

The bee palaces were made as nesting sites for wild bees, the idea being to create something both beautiful and functional to foster populations of wild bees. The first piece was installed at Distant Hill Gardens in Walpole, New Hampshire.  The second piece was created while on a two month artist residency at Tulane’s Studio in the Woods, and was installed at the Audubon Park Zoo, New Orleans.

The bird seed palaces are made of birdseed combined with an edible hardening material. Over time birds came and ate the sculptures and the pieces disappeared. The first pieces were installed in backyards in Providence and New Hampshire, the last piece was installed at the Audubon Society in Bristol, Rhode Island.
