Evolution of Darwin

In this installation I used salt, rust, and water to create images of famous scientists on the concrete of Metcalf Plaza. Entitled β€œThe Evolution of Darwin,” the exhibition blended art and science to explore what transformation and evolution mean in both fields.

The portraits were created using iron filings, which were placed between two pieces of cotton gauze and then set on a concrete surface. Each image was covered with a salt sculpture. Over time, the salt dissolved, the filings rusted, the gauze blew away, and the portraits were left on on the concrete below. Over several years, the portraits too disappeared.
