River Box

Bell Gallery, Brown University, Providence, RI

2004 The River was initially meant to be part of a larger installation, incorporating the soap and vats, called “Until Everything Not Essential was Washed Away.” The piece consisted of a 12 ft x 6 ft box—20” high—that had 500 rocks, 25 motors, and 20 underwater lights that simulated a river. Draped over the rocks were 7 pieces of tethered colored fabric, that were suggestive of dresses undulating in the current. Over the course of the exhibition, the color in the fabric slowly washed away.
